BSE Sensex rises 44 points, investors wary
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex rose 0.29 percent on Thursday to its highest close in about 7 weeks though market sentiment remained subdued on concerns about weak global markets and India's annual inflation rate.
The 30-share benchmark index added 43.71 points to close at 15,117.25 with 19 components ending in the green. After opening at 15,031.86, the index touched an intraday high of 15,280.06 and a low of 14,992.97.
Despite Thursday's gain, the Sensex, which hit a record high of 21,206.77 on Jan. 10, is still down about 24.6 percent this year, and continues to be one of the worst performers in Asia.
The day's biggest gainer was Sterlite Industries, which surged 4.43 percent to close at Rs.614.
Auto majors Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki soared 4.10 percent, 2.48 percent and 2.41 percent to close at Rs.444.20, Rs.575.95 and Rs.668.55 respectively.
Financial stocks Housing Development Finance Corporation, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India climbed 3.37 percent, 3.03 percent, 0.24 percent and 0.03 percent to close at Rs.2476.60, Rs.1253.70, Rs.708.50, and Rs.1524.10 respectively.
Cement makers Grasim Industries and ACC advanced 2.49 percent and 0.24 percent to close at Rs.2089.35 and Rs.639.10 respectively.
Tech majors Satyam Computer Services and Infosys Technologies ended up 2.25 percent and 1.32 percent to close at Rs.416.55 and Rs.1721.40 respectively.
Other gainers were DLF (up 1.88 percent at Rs.554.85), NTPC (up 1.78 percent at Rs.183.45), Reliance Infrastructure (up 1.32 percent at Rs.1024.35), Jaiprakash Associates (up 1.22 percent at Rs.187.40), ITC (up 0.97 percent at Rs.191.70), ONGC (up 0.71 percent at Rs.1023.15) and Hindalco (up 0.25 percent at Rs.142).
The biggest loser of the day was BHEL, which plunged 2.88 percent to close at Rs.1774.65.
