BSE Sensex snaps 3-day upward streak, slips 79 points
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex snapped its 3-day winning streak by easing 0.54 percent on Monday as market concerns over the health of the US economy and rising oil prices worsened.
The 30-share benchmark index plunged 78.82 points to close at 14,577.87 with 16 components ending in the red. The index touched a high of 14,725.94 and a low of 14,503.51 during intraday trade.
The prime index, which hit a record high of 21,206.77 on Jan. 10, is still down about 28.3 percent this year, and continues to be one of the worst performers in Asia.
The worst performer of the day was India's largest IT consultant and software exporter, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which plunged 2.73 percent to close at Rs.816.30.
Its smaller rival Wipro shed 0.42 percent to close at Rs.430.80.
Top listed Reliance Industries slipped 2.49 percent to close at Rs.2242.50.
Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) shed 1.33 percent to close at 2656.55 while real estate giant DLF eased 1.22 percent to close at Rs.513.80.
Financial stocks Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) and ICICI Bank tumbled 1.22 percent and 0.25 percent to close at Rs.2372.80 and Rs.642.10 respectively.
Auto majors Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors ended down 0.77 percent and 0.59 percent at Rs.519.65 and Rs.396.25 respectively.
Other losers were BHEL (down 2.41 percent at Rs.1714.15), ONGC (down 1.53 percent at Rs.981.55), Sterlite Industries (down 1.38 percent at Rs.623.95), Reliance Infrastructure (down 0.89 percent at Rs.1001.60), NTPC (down 0.88 percent at Rs.175.15), Hindustan Unilever (down 0.49 percent at Rs.234) and Bharti Airtel (down 0.35 percent at Rs.816.15).
