Reliance Big Entertainment signs deals with noted Bollywood film directors to churn out 69 films in 2 years
Reliance Big Entertainment, the entertainment arm of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group, plans to become the forerunner in the Indian entertainment industry and has announced that it will invest $1 billion to produce, co-produce or distribute 69 films in English, Hindi and other regional Indian languages over the next two years.
In this regard, the company has signed deals with several noted Bollywood directors including a two-film deal with director Shyam Benegal, four-film deal with Madhur Bhandarkar, three-film deal with Vivek Agnihotri and two-film deal with Sudhir Mishra.
In addition, it has struck deals with Vinod Chopra Films and Excel Entertainment which will see the company co-produce eight films and own global distribution rights in all media.
Bollywood superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Govinda and Rishi Kapoor will feature in some of these films.
"We are excited to be associated with Reliance Big Entertainment and know that through this alliance our films will reach every corner of the world, allowing us to take our cinema to the next level," said Vinod Chopra of 'Parinda' and 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S.' fame.
"Bringing Vinod Chopra Films to Reliance Big Entertainment is a major coup for us. To be able to collaborate with someone as passionate about the industry as Vinod is both an exciting opportunity and a privilege. We look forward to celebrating future success together," said Amit Khanna, chairman, Reliance Big Entertainment.
"India is uniquely positioned in the global economic order. We believe this is the right time to make this commitment of $1 billion for the film entertainment business," Khanna said.
"We believe we are creating 21st century's truly integrated media and entertainment company. Our $1 billion spend is bigger than the cumulative investments of all other Indian players put together in this space. We will continue our aggressive expansion plans in film exhibition and leverage synergies to our growing production and distribution pipeline," he said.
According to Rajesh Sawhney, president of Reliance Entertainment (which controls Reliance Big Entertainment), the company has "one of the best creatively differentiated slate of movies."
"Our biggest challenge is to get our content and distribution to work in harmony. We believe digital and home entertainment will be unique for our growth," he said.
