Ranbaxy to develop herbal drugs
In a bid to tap India's growing herbal industry and expand its own product portfolio, India's largest drugmaker, Ranbaxy Laboratores Ltd. (RLL), has announced its plans to undertake collaborative efforts with leading institutions of the country for new discoveries in herbal drugs for lifestyle diseases.
According to Pradip K. Bhatnagar, vice president, new drug discovery research at Ranbaxy Laboratories, the Gurgaon-based company has partnered with some institutes such as Anna University (Chennai) and Central Drug Research Institute (CRDI) Lucknow and are working on the development of drugs against Diabetes, Asthma and cardiovascular diseases in its bid to capture a sizeable chunk of the Rs. 5,000 crore medicinal plant-based drug market.
Bhatnagar, however, said the company has not set any definitive timeline for the herbal drugs from the joint effort to hit the market as it was awaiting a proper standard for herbal medicines.
"Government is working on standardizing drugs other than modern and RLL will not like to come out with drugs without having standards in place," he said, adding, however, that the company was well in the process of discovery.
"The company, which started herbal research in 2003, has made significant investment both in terms of manpower and infrastructure," said C.K. Katiyar, director, herbal drug research, Ranbaxy, declining to disclosing the details of the amount invested into the herbal research.
Currently, the company has 20 research scientists dedicated for herbal research and has been growing at 15 percent for the last three years, he said, adding that the company was on the lookout for partners for distribution of herbal drugs.
"Besides India, we might also look at 8-10 countries where the company is currently supplying consumer care products," he added.
